Make Oral Health A Priority In Your Family

Do Family Teeth Brushing

The best way to create a lasting habit is to do it consistently. If you are a parent to a young child who is just now growing as well as learning about their teeth, begin teaching them to brush their teeth twice everyday. One of the best ways to instill this habit is for you to show them the importance of it yourself. Bring them into the bathroom with you as you brush your teeth in the morning and at night. Let them see how thorough you’re being with the toothbrush, as well as the floss. If they see their parents making teeth brushing a priority, they will be more willing to pick it up themselves.

If your child is a little older, you can make teeth brushing fun by having family brushing meetings! Gather your entire family in the bathroom before bed so that everyone can brush their teeth together. For the younger kids, this will make the process of brushing seem like a fun activity. And you may find that the more you do family teeth brushing, the more excited they get about caring for their teeth.


This is good advice if you are a parent to children ages six and up. During this age, they are finding and voicing their individuality, and if they don’t want to do something, they will let you know. And when it comes to brushing their teeth, they may be more equipped to say “no” and fight you on it. In order to make sure they are still taking care of their teeth daily, you can start incentivizing them. Make a checklist of the personal care activities that they need to stay consistent with. When they do one, like taking a bath or brushing their teeth, have them check it off of the list. Once all of them are checked off, you can reward them with a treat or a fun activity. This way, they can continue to form this important habit of taking care of their oral hygiene without you doing it for them. They will be incentivized, yet they’ll still be brushing their teeth themselves.

Don’t Forget The Flossing

An essential aspect to overall oral health is flossing. Children should start flossing their teeth when they are around the age of six, give or take a few  years. If you have a child this age, or nearing it, then it’s time to start teaching and introducing them to flossing. Just like you did with teeth brushing, you can show them how you floss, making sure you do it consistently so they see the importance of it. If you come into problems with their willingness to floss, add it to the checklist that we mentioned above. Reward them for thoroughly flossing their teeth after brushing each night.

Discuss How Food Affects Their Teeth

Children love sweets. That’s just a fact! While you may get on your child’s case for overeating candy for health purposes, it’s also important that you address how sugary treats and hard candies affect their teeth and mouths, not just their mind and body. Talk to them about how the sugar can build up on the surface of their teeth overtime, and how it can negatively impact their oral health if they don’t stay consistent with teeth brushing and flossing. You can even encourage them to clean their teeth after they eat a piece of candy or cake, just so they continue to learn the importance of clean, healthy teeth.
