Maintaining a healthy smile with braces isn’t as difficult as it sounds. While your mouth and teeth may feel tender and sore after the first few days of receiving your braces, the good news is, it gets better. Usually within two to three days, the soreness will subside and you’ll be on your way to a more healthy and beautiful smile. While braces themselves don’t cause stains, insufficient teeth cleaning while wearing braces can lead to enamel stains or even tooth decay.

When To Clean Your Teeth

Most dental professionals recommend brushing your teeth after every meal for optimal oral care. If you don’t have access to a toothbrush after every meal, rinse your mouth out with water immediately after eating to remove pieces of food that could be trapped in your teeth and braces.

If you’re new to brushing your teeth with braces, consider using a soft-bristle brush or a bi-level brush (a toothbrush that has shorter bristles in the middle, and longer bristles along the edges). Your electric toothbrush can work just as well, as long as you set the intensity to a moderate level. You may have difficulty brushing near brackets and wires, but there are some special tools that can help.

One of our favorite tools is the interdental toothbrush, also known as a proxabrush. This toothbrush has a small group of bristles that stick up all around, similar to a pipe cleaner. A great tool for cleaning the tiny spaces under your wires and around your bands and brackets, you can usually pick these up at a nearby convenient store. Another favorite cleaning tool is the oral irrigator, or the water pick. This electronic device shoots a small pressurized stream of water at your teeth, which can help dislodge pieces of food trapped between your teeth or wires.

How To Floss Your Teeth With Braces

When it comes to maintaining a beautiful smile with braces, flossing is extremely important and should be done at least once a day. You may be wondering how to get the dental floss under the archwire of your braces, but it’s not as difficult as it seems. With the help of a floss threader, you can grasp the floss with ease and maneuver it around your teeth and braces.

Using Mouthwash With Braces

Using an antibacterial mouthwash can help subside mild swelling of the gum tissue caused by irritation from your braces.

Keeping A Tooth-Friendly Diet

It should come as no surprise that everything you consume has an impact on the health of your teeth. Acidic foods and drinks, such as soda and vinaigrette dressings, can actual damage tooth enamel, while sugary foods can lead to cavities and tooth decay.
